Word History of WALNUT
Walnut trees grew in southern Europe for a long time before they were grown in England. As a result the English gave the walnut a name which showed plainly that it was not an English nut. The Old English name for this southern nut was wealhhnutu, from wealh, “foreigner,” and hnutu, “nut.” The modern English word walnut comes from the Old English name.
