:  a genus of shrubs or small trees (family Rhamnaceae) that are chiefly native to Mexico and the southwestern United States, have flowers with small hooded short-clawed petals and fleshy drupes, and include one (K. humboldtiana) with a fruit that has been known to poison birds (as domestic chickens)

Kar·win·sky Von Kar·win \kär-ˈvin-skē-fn-ˈkär-vin\ , Wilhelm (died 1855), German traveler. The genus Karwinskia was named in Karwinsky's honor in 1832.
