:  any of a group of isoenzymes that catalyze reversibly the conversion of pyruvic acid to lactic acid, are found especially in the liver, kidneys, striated muscle, and the myocardium, and tend to accumulate in the body when these organs or tissues are diseased or injured—called also lactic dehydrogenase
