: eosinophilia with severe myalgia and often arthralgia, rash, peripheral edema, and cough or dyspnea that occurred especially in 1989 and 1990 in individuals who made extensive use of L-tryptophan containing a toxic contaminant—abbreviation EMS; called also eosinophilia-myalgia
