Medical Definition of SPHINGOMYELINASE
: any of several enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of sphingomyelin and are lacking in some metabolic deficiency diseases (as Niemann-Pick disease) in which sphingomyelin accumulates in bodily organs (as the spleen and liver)
