Word History of JEANS

The Jean in jeans, if we follow it back far enough, was the name of a city, not a person. Several centuries ago jean was an adjective describing a kind of fustian (a heavy cotton and linen cloth). Jean fustian was originally imported from the Italian city of Genoa, which in medieval English was called Gene. Eventually the word jean alone became the name of a kind of cloth, and then an article made from the cloth.
