Medical Definition of FOOTPRINTING

:  identification of the binding sites between a specific DNA and a protein by subjecting a complex of the DNA and protein to chemical digestion and comparing the resulting fragments with those obtained by digestion of the same DNA which does not have some of its cleavage sites protected by binding with the protein
